The organisational structure of the NSW Breast Cancer Institute reflects the flexibility and responsiveness required of an organisation in a constantly changing environment. The structure is best described as a ‘functional-matrix’, consisting of three programs – Research, Education and Clinical Care – and the Service Units – Business, Information Management, Organisational Development and, Marketing and Promotions – which support corporate and program specific goals and objectives. The Program and Service Unit managers report directly to the Executive Director and together with the Directors, form the Management Committee of the NSW BCI.
An integral part of the structure are teams which can form with the appropriate skills, knowledge and accountability mix to undertake projects and short term initiatives and dissolve when the desired outcome is completed. This allows for opportunities to be taken up as and when they present themselves, externally imposed changes in priorities and emphasis to be addressed and, reduction in duplication of effort and resources. Communication is also both enhanced intra and inter Service, Program and management boundaries.
